Coastal Erosion
Sefton Council
Problem:
Sefton Council’s coastal engineers needed to understand how the section of the Sefton coast has evolved over time to help develop plans to protect its future. Historical maps were devoid of much information critical to the coastal survey so a different approach was required.
Solution:
We scanned and georectified over 2,000 historic aerial images from the RAF’s 1945 survey of the UK, extracts from this database were supplied in specialist software with modern aerial imagery to enable the coastal engineers to directly compare the state of the coast over a 60 year period.
Benefits:
The solution was a simple yet powerful one that enabled the engineers to directly visualise and measure change. The detailed aerial photography also enabled the engineers and others to assess the type of change that has occurred.
