Problem: GLA needed an accurate and detailed tree database to implement policies for the improvement of greenspace and growth of tree cover across London.
Solution: The GeoInformation Group extracted trees and vegetation from UKMap large scale mapping, it’s high resolution 10cm aerial photography and high resolution LiDAR. It generated a complex and unique feature base rule set that first identified and then extracted and classified vegetation based on its height. It then generated tree and vegetation mapping across London to provide detailed analysis of tree cover on a London borough basis.
Benefits: GLA now have a verified and accurate base map for trees and vegetation which can now support policy making and can be updated in a systematic manner in the future.
