Woodland Mapping

Forestry Commission

Problem: The Forestry Commission in Wales needed to assess the ancient woodland in Wales for future preservation.  Historical maps showed the presence of woodland but these did not correlate with current woodland inventories. Solution: We created a geospatial database by digitising the  woodland extent from the historical maps.  These woodlands were then compared with a number of other more recent woodland maps, including aerial photos and by careful generation of a set of rules, in conjunction with the Forestry Commission we were able to produce an Ancient Woodland Inventory for Wales. Benefits: The new modern format database provides detailed, accurate and robust information on the Ancient Woodland Inventory so improving the protection of this important landscape.  The data collection process has also produced additional improvements in existing data holdings through the verification process.  The project was delivered on time and to budget.
